One of the fellow players, who additionally organizes highly regarded poker trainings, decided one day to share some valuable pieces of advice, which are for free, relatively easy to follow, and, according to their author, will help aspiring players get through to higher stakes very quickly. So, read carefully…
I have been recently wondering what advice could be given to low stakes players, so that in a short time they could advance. There are many methods and believe me, it can be done in no time at all. In extreme cases a NL25 player can become a regular NL200 player in 3-4 months, although he needs a bit of luck and discipline – probably not in the game itself, but in finding the exact method which would prove most effective for him, and then in finding the right motivation to proceed.
One of the most valued developmental and motivational coaches, Brian Tracy, has formulated 20 ways to achieve “something”. He maintains that if you want to accomplish something, you should devote 15 minutes (pleeeeeenty of time, isn’t it?) to write down 20 ways in which you want to do it. Not 19, but 20 exactly!!! Or even more. Tracy assures that at least one of those methods will be the right one.
I describe this method on my trainings and I know that those who had followed it very precisely are getting better results. It has also proved effective in my case, so go on and test it for yourself.
Below you can find 20 pieces of advice (according to my own discretion) for micro players who want to achieve higher levels. I have written what I think is right, but you should judge for yourself, so treat the below points as guidance and not as a ready-made prescription for success.
If you are a micro player and want to achieve higher levels quickly:
- 1. Play more frequently. Not 10k, not 20, 30, but at least 50k hands deals. Without any excuses.
- 2. Estimate precisely at what number of tables you play most effectively. Do not act stupid and practice masstabling only because your friends do so.
- 3. Subscribe to a coaching website: DeucesCracked, CardRunners, LeggoPoker or some other. I realize it is expensive, but it is a f… investment in yourself, isn’t it? And it pays for itself very quickly!!!
- 4. Ask some more experienced player if you could send him/her some of your deals to analyze. It will help a lot. If he agrees – great, if not – it did not cost you a thing.
- 5. It is advisable to view different blogs on a regular basis, but not those owned by laggards who write how much they are reluctant to get down to work or about holidays, girls, parties and so on. Treat it as a fiction. There are many forum, in many languages. If you do not know any foreign language, install Google chrome – this browser will translate everything.
- 6. Create a blog!!! I know that you will probably start looking for excuses right away. Keeping a good blog, that shows your efforts, is extremely EV+. I will not say in what way because it is a surprise. Try for yourself.
- 7. Plan your day, so that you will have more time for everything. To play, to relax, to study.
- 8. Invest in yourself. And I mean not only by coaching websites (I have mentioned them earlier) but also by trainings, lectures, books, private coaches!!! There is a reason why all of them enjoy such popularity. They pay for themselves and your abilities will develop very quickly.
- 9. Study regularly. The better you become, the less time you need to study. If you devote 200h monthly to poker, setting aside 100-120h to game and the rest to learning, I guarantee that you will make huuuuuge headway.
- 10. Look through your deals and deals of others, ask and inquire!!! When you are in a doubt, take a calculator and count. I am in the possession of several dozen files with such notes on my computer.
- 11. It is a good idea to buy yourself good equipment (computer+monitor+chair).
- 12. Start practicing sport. If you are in a good shape, your brain will function more effectively.
- 13. Exchange your opinions with your friends; it is good to have something like a mini coaching group.
- 14. Try to imitate better players, not those from HSP like Farha who raises 92o and so on. Imitate players online who are better than you but still it cannot be precisely defined how better they should be. 1-2-3 levels higher. You can always ask somebody for advice, because maybe it will prove extremely important for you.
- 15. Find for yourself a good rakeback! Search and ask for it exhaustively: it is all about your money and a boost of your bankroll.
- 16. Have respect for your bankroll. I am not going to recommend the BI amount, it is an individual decision. The simplest rules are: the less you spend, the more you have. The more you play, the more you earn. The more you earn, the quicker you get to the higher stakes.
- 17. Write down your aims on the piece of paper!!! Seriously, do it! People usually neglect this point and it is incredibly important. Set yourself aims for one month, 3 months, 6 months. Of course you can modify them in the meantime. It is also crucial to take small steps forward.
- 18. Develop your skills. Not only in the field of poker. Self-development books will be very helpful. You will grow as a person, your value and strength will increase as well. For starters, I recommend “Awaken the Giant Within”.
- 19. If it is possible move in to another poker player.
- 20. Stop wasting time going through different forums, writing unnecessary comments, watching television series. Especially in time set aside for poker. Look at it this way: if you, for example, earn $10 per hour and spend 20h per week just loafing about, it is as if you were voluntarily giving up $200 weekly or $800 monthly.
- 21. ….
So there is nothing for you to do but to move your ass and either follow the above pieces of advice as well as you can or write your own list and make sure you will adhere to it in a truly obsessive way!!! Of course only if you are really determined to develop your skills faster. Otherwise you can go on and be like the rest 80% of poker players in the world…
I hope that at least some of the things I have written will be useful for you. Keep well!
